Biological desulfurization, in simple terms, is a technology that uses the power of sulfur bacteria to remove sulfur-containing compounds from substances under mild conditions of normal temperature and pressure. Compared with traditional chemical desulfurization methods, biological desulfurization is like a gentle and efficient "cleaner" with many remarkable advantages. It not only does not rely on expensive chemical catalysts, greatly reducing costs, but also has low energy consumption. At the same time, it can convert sulfur into elemental sulfur for recycling, achieving resource reuse and truly achieving a win-win situation for environmental protection and economy. The magic of this technology lies in its ingenious reaction principle. The entire desulfurization process is like an orderly "chemical reaction relay race", mainly completed in the two "main battlefields" of the desulfurization reaction tower and the regeneration pool.

In the desulfurization reaction tower, the chemical reaction that occurs is H2S (G)+OH - → HS (L)+H2O. During this process, H2S is effectively removed while OH - is consumed. In the regeneration pool, desulfurizing bacteria play a key role. They feed on sulfides in the circulating water, convert them into elemental sulfur through metabolism, and regenerate OH -. The chemical equation is HS (L)+1/2O2 → S+OH -. Elemental sulfur will be discharged from the bottom of the sedimentation tank in the form of sulfur-containing sludge, and the supernatant of the sedimentation tank will be returned to the circulating water system. This design significantly reduces water consumption and alkali usage, making the entire desulfurization process more economical and environmentally friendly.

The characteristics and advantages of biological desulfurization technology are very significant. Its desulfurization efficiency is extremely high, with a H2S removal rate of over 99.5%, and it can also easily remove other organic sulfides such as COS, making it an all-around player in the desulfurization industry. Secondly, the cost advantage is prominent. This process only requires a certain proportion of compressed air, supplemented with a small amount of nutrient solution, softened water, and alkali solution, without the need to add expensive chemical reagents. The operating cost is only one-third or even one tenth of traditional wet desulfurization (alkali washing) and dry desulfurization (chemical oxidation).

It is worth mentioning that its desulfurization final product is high-purity elemental sulfur, without secondary pollution, no need for further treatment, and can be sold directly, bringing additional profits. In addition, biological desulfurization technology does not reduce the calorific value of biogas. The washing tower and the washing liquid biological regeneration reactor are physically isolated and do not introduce air or oxygen into biogas, ensuring the quality of biogas. It also has strong load resistance, and even if the H2S concentration fluctuates significantly between 100-40000 ppm, its impact on the entire desulfurization system is minimal. At the same time, the automation level of this technology is extremely high, with real-time monitoring of key parameters through PLC and online monitoring instruments, achieving fully automatic operation almost without manual intervention, greatly reducing labor intensity.
